Article: Possible Conflicts Delay Hearing in Edmond Case

The preliminary hearing for 17 members of an alleged cocaine distribution gang led by Rayful Edmond III was stalled yesterday by possible conflicts of interest involving two Washington law firms that represent a large number of clients in drug cases.

During two special hearings, U.S. Magistrate Deborah A. Robinson advised five defendants in the case that their attorneys might have "divided loyalties" because they now represent or have represented other alleged gang members charged with them.

Robinson did not address another potential conflict that authorities say could force Arthur M. Reynolds Jr., Edmond's attorney, to withdraw from the case.
