In the process of gathering information on convenience foods, I picked up a package of precooked bacon, the stuff that's ready `in 5 or 10 seconds,' or more, depending on the brand, the packages say. Now, I can't stand Bacos, a synthetic product if I ever tasted one, but this is real bacon, shelf stable so it can always be on hand.

It cooked, as promised, in the requisite time. But it looked rather industrial, perfectly flat, as though it had been run through rollers. It was chewy rather than crisp.

But what was really missing was the anticipation - and the aroma. Is there any smell more inviting that the smell of bacon cooking? Giving up the smell is like foregoing the smell of a pie or ...
