Chinese university students demonstrating for democratic freedoms are risking arrest, an end to their academic careers or at the least a bad job assignment if they push their protests and demands too far.

But these students share a powerful sense that they are upholding a historical tradition of student protest in China. They are also strongly motivated by frustration over the Communist Party leaders' resistance to political change.
