Chinese university students demonstrating for democratic freedoms
are risking arrest, an end to their academic careers or at the least
a bad job assignment if they push their protests and demands too far.
But these students share a powerful sense that they are upholding
a historical tradition of student protest in China. They are also
strongly motivated by frustration over the Communist Party leaders'
resistance to political change.
Over the past four years, the capital's elite students have
repeatedly demonstrated to demand political reforms, including
freedom of speech, press and assembly.
