CINCINNATI - Victories don't come much more costly than what the
first game of a doubleheader Tuesday cost the Cincinnati Reds. They
gained a game on the St. Louis Cardinals with a 5-4 victory, but they
lost outfielder and Rookie of the Year candidate Austin Kearns, maybe
the rest of the season.
Chuck Finley, the left-hander Reds general manager Jim Bowden
nearly acquired in a trade, showed in Game 2 why Bowden wanted him.
He limited the Reds to two hits, both by Juan Castro, and the
Cardinals grabbed a split with a 5-0 victory.
Kearns, the team's best hitter all season, injured his left
hamstring in the fifth inning trying to beat out an infield hit and
was immediately placed on the 15-day ...
