Boxing in Washington has had its moments. Some have been grand,
others strange. Either way, major fights don't happen here often.
Thursday night's Simon Brown-Al (Bumblebee) Long fight at the
Starplex/D.C. Armory will be the first title fight in Washington in
30 years.
The last scheduled title fight here never came off. Michael
Spinks-Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for the light heavyweight championship
was set for July 15, 1983, but was canceled that day when Muhammad
failed to make the weight.
At the last title fight in Washington, June 3, 1959, the
spectators were more interesting than the participants. Joe (Old
