Prescription demand heavy to beat shift

Banners heralded its impending arrival. Stores announced to shoppers that Claritin, the top-selling allergy relief medication, would soon be available without a prescription.

But customers refrained from emptying the shelves when Claritin became available over the counter in local stores last week.

"Nobody's been saying, `Oh, I can't wait 'til it comes out,' ' said pharmacist Ron Rust of the Medicine Shoppe in Beavercreek. Several colleagues hadn't had much demand for the drug, either, he said.

Nonprescription Claritin became sporadically available at different stores from Tuesday through the weekend, but that wasn't the only reason for slow demand. ...
