A few years back, Virginia's Richmond-based political
establishment had a derisive nickname for the fast-growing,
relatively liberal part of the state just outside Washington: "The
People's Republic of Northern Virginia." By Richmond's conservative
standards, nothing good ever seemed to come from up there.
But as this year's campaign for governor and other major offices
gathers momentum, something vital to politicians across the state is
pouring out of Northern Virginia: money. And many say the flow of
campaign contributions is changing the flow of state politics.
