Pope John Paul II began a visit to this wealthy, westernized
French Indian Ocean island, a stark contrast to the impoverished
nations on his African tour.
Reunion's well-paved roads and modern white houses are a world
apart from the grinding poverty he saw in Madagascar, 420 miles to
the west, and will see next in Zambia and Malawi.
Speaking here, the pope paid tribute to the racial harmony
