MONTGOMERY COUNTY HAS FIRST WEST NILE DEATH

Officials say 78-year-old had ailing health

A Montgomery County resident has become the first in the Miami Valley to die of West Nile virus since it began infecting people here last year.

The victim was a 78-year-old man from Butler Twp. with "multiple health problems," the only identification disclosed Tuesday by the Combined Health District of Montgomery County. He died Friday of encephalitis caused by the virus.

Deaths from West Nile virus are relatively rare. Fewer than 5 percent of Ohioans with reported infections have died since last year, including two this year through Friday. Many cases are not reported because symptoms usually are mild.
