Adults who regularly take daily doses of acetaminophen, a common
pain reliever found in Tylenol and dozens of other nonprescription
remedies for headaches, colds and allergies, appear to have a risk
three times higher than normal of developing serious kidney disease,
according to a new study.
Researchers caution that the link between acetaminophen and
kidney disorders should be considered "tentative" until it is
confirmed by further studies. But a recent German study showed
similar results, said Dale P. Sandler, an epidemiologist at the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and principal
author of the report in today's New England Journal of Medicine.
