Eleven hours is a long trip, and at times Homer's wine-dark sea
looked gray and murky. But as we steamed our final miles toward the
Greek island of Pa'tmos, the magic began. Suddenly the dark Aegean
night was broken by dancing lights-seemingly suspended in midair-that
disappeared and reappeared as the ship rounded the curving, hilly
coastline. It was not until our arrival at the Ska'la harbor on the
island's eastern side that the idea of terra firma returned.
Night arrivals at an unknown destination are always somewhat
disconcerting, and Pa'tmos was no exception. Although the pier and
port were brightly lit and crowded with the relatives of returning
Patmians, hotel porters and a few ...
