There's a bushel basket of options for cooks

Forget the debate about the difference between a sweet potato and a yam. What's worth knowing is that not all sweet potatoes are created equal, and that's important in this season, the only time when local farmers harvest their sweet potato crop.

Farmer Mike Brown, who sells at multiple farm markets, raises 11 varieties of sweet potatoes. While the heavy summer rains produced smaller sweet potatoes - it's a vegetable that doesn't like wet feet - the warm, sunny days of the second week of this month provided ideal days for harvesting and curing the crop. Curing is necessary to bring out the sweetness.
