Article: Rapist Convicted of Escaping From Patuxent Halfway House; Inmate Was Given 6 Unsupervised Leaves

Convicted rapist James M. Stavarakas was granted six unsupervised leaves before escaping from a Patuxent Institution halfway house in November, a Maryland social worker testified yesterday.

Officials from the controversial state prison described Stavarakas' life in a work-release program during a one-day court trial in Howard County Circuit Court. Judge Raymond J. Kane Jr. found Stavarakas guilty on a single charge of escape, which carries a maximum 10-year sentence.
