Radar, our most powerful tool for tornado detection and warning,
has made incredible and life-saving advances since a tornado hit
Xenia in 1974.
On April 3, 1974, Channel 7's Gil Whitney showed an image of the
powerful twister. Although the station had one of the first live
television radars in the country, that radar could see only the
strongest, most well-defined tornadoes, which included the 1974 Xenia
tornado. Still, the information that Whitney was able to convey no
doubt saved lives. If Whitney had been able to use the modern Doppler
radar of today, it is likely the tornado would have been detected
well before it struck Xenia, and more lives could have been saved.
