Traditionally, deviled eggs - made with your mother's or grandmother's recipe - are comfort food, the first thing to disappear at a potluck party.

But cooks can't resist tinkering with a recipe, even a winner. Enter the new book Deviled Eggs by Debbie Moose (Harvard Common, $12.95), a pretty little book with recipes that extend the cook's repertoire in every direction.

They are uptown, quirky concoctions that use contemporary flavorings - pesto sauce or Cajun spices or habanero pepper sauce. Friends who acted as tasters here gave approval to several batches of them.
