More than 1 million Chinese citizens, defying martial law, took
over sizable areas of Beijing Saturday and early today in a widening,
nonviolent revolt against the communist government that has included
calls for the resignation of China's top leaders.
Students and workers at numerous points throughout the city
blocked army soldiers attempting to enter central Beijing under a
decree issued Saturday imposing martial law on parts of the capital.
In the first violence reported since a student movement for
democracy exploded into a popular, peaceful uprising last week, 10
students suffered serious wounds and more than 20 were slightly
