When Donald P. Gregg decided in late 1984 to help Felix I.
Rodriguez, a former CIA operative and longtime friend, go to El
Salvador to advise the government there in its fight against leftist
guerrillas, Gregg said he first checked with his boss, Vice President
George Bush.
When Rodriguez was about to depart for El Salvador in January
1985, Gregg, Bush's national security adviser at the time, said he
introduced Rodriguez to Bush so the vice president could hear
firsthand of Rodriguez's mission.
In the 22 months that followed, Rodriguez often boasted of his
Bush connections and frequently kept in touch with Gregg and one of
