Pittsburgh's Simon homers in the ninth to send full house home disappointed

CINCINNATI - All those great Reds teams from the 1970s didn't do what the current team did Saturday night.

No, not lose 1-0 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on a leadoff homer in the ninth inning by Randall Simon, a guy who ruined the night for the Reds the way he ruined one of those sausage races in Milwaukee last year. Different swing, maybe, but the same result.

What the Reds really did that none of their predecessors did since they plopped themselves down by the riverfront in 1970 is play before a fourth straight home regular-season sellout crowd.

It never happened before, not even while the Reds were winning pennants ...
