Q. I recently acquired a "tennis bracelet" made of small matched
diamonds set in a flexible band. The idea of dazzling one's opponent
while returning a serve seems unsporting. How did such a design get
its name?
When and where is it correct to wear diamonds in the daytime?
One does make a distinction between diamond stud earrings and
"chandeliers," between small stones in a pendant and a full parure.
But are these distinctions meaningful? And are there different rules
for colored stones?
A. If it were not for its name, and the resulting suggestion for
its misuse, the "tennis bracelet" would be reeking of good taste.
