The Chicago Tribune test kitchen took on questions about the best way to prepare cake pans for baking. Does butter work better than vegetable shortening when greasing pans? Is it necessary to dust pans with flour? Should you line the pan with parchment paper or wax paper?

Although most recipe instructions recommend greasing and flouring baking pans before adding cake batter, the test-kitchen trial discovered that another method worked even better.
