COMMENTARY; WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?

Sixteen years old.

That's the age of the suspect charged in the slaying of Dayton Daily News reporter Derek Ali around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Sixteen years old.

That's the age of the bystander, Ja Mesz Smith, killed in the parking lot at Marables Party House less than an hour later and less than two miles away.

As the mother of 13 children, six of them teenagers, Jacqueline Givens has a hard time getting her arms around that number. `The suspect was 16 years old - what was he doing running around with a gun? What are all these kids doing out on the street? And where are all these parents?'

Givens knows there are no simple answers. `It's heartbreaking,' she said. And she's far from the only Dayton ...
