Syria survived the most serious challenge to date to its presence
and policies in Lebanon when Arab leaders meeting here declined today
to adopt a resolution explicitly calling for the withdrawal of Syrian
troops and the intervention of an Arab peace-keeping force.
Falling back to a less confrontational posture toward Syria, the
Arab League summit set up a committee of three heads of
state-Morocco's King Hassan II, Saudi Arabia's King Fahd and Algerian
President Chadli Bendjedid-to oversee another attempt at a political
solution between warring Christian and Moslem communities.
