Cito Gaston today moved up from interim manager to manager of the
Toronto Blue Jays, who had said he had no chance for the job when
they fired Jimy Williams on May 15.
Gaston, the Blue Jays' hitting coach under Williams, is the
fourth black manager in major league baseball history. During his
interim leadership the team went 8-6, but he lost tonight to the
Indians, 7-4.
General Manager Pat Gillick had wanted to hire Lou Piniella, but
the New York Yankees have him under contract and wanted compensation.
Gillick also interviewed the Blue Jays' Class AAA manager, Bob
Bailor, and coach Terry Bevington of the Chicago White Sox.
