Article: Pioneer Cardiac Surgeon Charles A. Hufnagel Dies

Charles Anthony Hufnagel, 72, a pioneering cardiac surgeon who developed and implanted the first artificial heart valve in a human patient, died yesterday at Sibley Memorial Hospital. He had heart, lung and kidney ailments.

Dr. Hufnagel also participated in the first human kidney transplant, an operation he performed with two other surgeons in 1947 in the patient's room by the light of gooseneck lamps at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital.

He was instrumental in the development of the modern heart-lung machine used during open heart surgery, and his principles of early heart valve construction still serve as a model for today's implants.
