Article: Municipal court system survived flood

Legislation signed into law on May 2, 1913, was just part of the very active first term of Gov. James M. Cox, who founded the

Dayton Daily News.

That law created the Dayton Municipal Court.

The legislation passed by the Ohio General Assembly provided for enlarging and extending the jurisdiction of the City of Dayton's Police Court and changing its name to the Municipal Court of Dayton. It also created the Clerk of Court office and merged the former duties of the Police Court and justices of peace into a three-judge court.

At the same time, the formation of the city manager type of government also brought on legislation for the Dayton Municipal Court.
