Premier Li Peng, out of public view since a weekend army massacre
of protesters, appeared on television today to praise the soldiers
who carried it out, as Communist authorities declared prodemocracy
activists to be counterrevolutionaries and called on Chinese to
inform on their fellow citizens.
Although a surface calm began to settle over the capital, with
soldiers clearing up debris and traffic flowing again on pavement
that for days had been the preserve of troops and tanks, authorities
made a series of announcements indicating they were pressing their
crackdown on dissent, and foreigners, fearing more violence,
continued to flee the city.
