Dyson's Top Aide Died Nearly Penniless;Court Records Show Pappas Had Debts of $13,000, No Savings

Thomas Pappas, the top aide to Rep. Roy Dyson (D-Md.), was essentially penniless when he plunged to his death from a New York hotel last year, court records indicate.

The 49-year-old Pappas jumped from a window of the Helmsley Palace Hotel in New York in May 1988 after an article in The Washington Post reported that he ran Dyson's congressional office in Washington in unorthodox fashion and made unusual demands on the male office staff.

Although Pappas liked to hold court at a Capitol Hill club, vacationed one year aboard the Orient Express in Europe, and maintained an expensive wardrobe, he apparently left no savings or assets when he died.
