The train platform amid the mountains and age-old forests throbs
with the light-hearted bustle of a European resort. A hundred yards
along a wooded path a hotel beckons with the comforts of a
long-established retreat, its lobby abuzz with travelers dressed for
hiking, climbing and wildlife watching. As is often true in Europe,
most of them have arrived by train.
But, though the lodge is closer to Moscow and Helsinki than to
Washington, it is hardly European. It is the Denali National Park
Hotel in the interior of Alaska and the staging ground for travelers
bound for mighty Mount McKinley.
And the line that delivers all these travelers is the Alaska
