In early May, Mary Chapin Carpenter won eight Wammies at the fourth
annual Washington Area Music Awards, bringing her four-year total to
18, including Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year for two
straight years. Carpenter stuck around at the Bayou to collect one
or two awards, then headed home to Alexandria.
"I stayed until 11, but I just couldn't stay awake and my ride
was leaving," she explains with slight embarrassment, adding, "Those
awards make me nervous."
Also in May, Carpenter heard her new single, "How Do," on WMZQ.
"There was something pretty hysterical about the first time I
heard myself on commercial radio," she confesses. "I turned the radio
