Michael Chang, just three months past his 17th birthday, won the
French Open today to become the first American man to win here in 34
years and the youngest male champion ever in Paris. He also is
believed to be the youngest to win a men's Grand Slam tennis
tournament and, henceforth, he will be known as the boldest.
Chang, of Placentia, Calif., defeated Sweden's Stefan Edberg over
five sets and 3 hours 41 minutes, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in a
grueling final at Stade Roland Garros. It lasted through the late
afternoon and drained the emotions of both players and a packed
center court crowd of 17,269.
