Maybe it won't come down to Curtis Strange against Tom Kite for
the U.S. Open championship that both crave. Come Sunday, maybe that
would just be too perfect. Strange, who shot 64 today, is trying to
become the first man since Ben Hogan to win back-to-back Opens. And
Kite, who has the grit of Hogan and wears Hogan's name all over his
body, is trying to win the first major championship of his long, rich
career.
These two buddies, these prize grinders who team together for the
United States in the Ryder Cup, may not stay at the top. But they're
there now-Strange at 135 and Kite at 136-after two rounds at stately,
soggy Oak Hill.
