The number of charter fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay has
dropped by half because bluefish, the bay's most popular sport fish,
are a no-show so far this year, charter boat captains say.
The abundance of bluefish has carried the multimillion-dollar
charter fishing industry in recent years.
Bluefish enjoy warm, salty waters, and they have stayed south
this year-near the mouth of the bay and off the Maryland
coast-because heavy spring rains have made the bay cool and fresh,
said W. Peter Jensen, state fisheries director. The situation
contrasts with the last few years, when drought made the bay salty
and warm, attracting droves of bluefish.
