Dayton has a rich musical history, but unlike Seattle, Wash., or Athens, Ga., our fair city, nestled along the winding Great Miami River, never had one distinct sound. The area has served as the launching pad for rock, bluegrass, punk, jazz, country and rock acts.

What follows is a list of the best local releases from the '70s, '80s and '90s. I didn't consider music from this decade, feeling you would need several years' distance to put the work into proper perspective.
