Article: Child-Care Bill Threatened With Veto;Administration Also Signals Willingness for Compromise

The White House warned yesterday that a Democratic child-care bill faces a presidential veto, but signaled willingness to compromise in order to avoid a partisan stalemate of the kind that has stymied legislation to raise the minimum wage.

The veto threat, conveyed to the Senate by Minority Leader Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.), came as party leaders cleared the way for a Senate vote today on rival Democratic and Republican child-care plans that had been held up in part by a dispute over an ambassadorial nomination for a former GOP senator.
