DAYTON -- The University of Dayton will be host to a new institute for electronic sensor technology that's expected to draw technical talent from across the country.

The Air Force Research Laboratory awarded UD a $3.2 million grant to establish the Ladar and Optical Communications Institute in the university's College Park Center, the university announced Monday.

Ladar is akin to radar, but it uses infrared laser beams instead of radio waves to measure remote objects. Some of its many uses include mapping, surveillance and targeting.
