There'sa difference between music that charms by creating an
atmosphere and the music of the great composers, which stands on its
own. The worst atmosphere music recalls composer Ned Rorem's
judgment that there's no originality, just disguised imitation. The
best engages, as did Scott Pender's sometimes brilliant music at
Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon.
Pender's Suite for Woodwind Quintet (a premiere) had an
invigorating last movement, whose mellow tempo belied the printed con
brio, though highlighted the entrancingly plaintive oboe part. ...
