Publicly reviled only months ago by his fellow black African
leaders as the heavy-handed strongman of one of the continent's most
corrupt countries, Zairian President Mobutu Sese Seko is seeking to
create a new image as a bold peace-broker as he begins a visit to
Washington.
Mobutu comes fresh from a stunning diplomatic breakthrough in
which he brought 17 African heads of state together to endorse a
cease-fire and new peace talks that could end the 14-year civil war
