Citizens of China's most prosperous province are trying to forget
the massacre of students in Beijing and the political power struggle
in the far-off capital so that they can get back to making money-what
south China does best.
Most of the Western and Japanese businessmen based here fled the
provincial capital of Guangzhou after martial law was declared in
Beijing about a month ago. But they had little to fear in Guangzhou,
where student demonstrations were orderly and the provincial
authorities reacted with restraint.
When as many as 60,000 students in Guangzhou demonstrated for
democracy last month and again early this month, they did so after
office hours so that they would not disrupt ...
