The limited sanctions against China that President Bush announced
June 5, widely criticized at the time as too pallid, have
unexpectedly led to the suspension of shipments of sophisticated
products worth "hundreds of millions" of dollars, according to
administration officials.
The decree banning commercial exports of weapons cut off sales
under at least 300 munitions-list licenses that were outstanding when
the Chinese government ordered the massacre of pro-democracy
demonstrators in Tiananmen Square. As a result, the ban has turned
out to be much tougher than anticipated.
