TROY -- It takes $1.2 million to collect residents' garbage, trash, recycling and brush -- 10 percent of the city's $12 million annual income tax collections.

The city staff would like residents to begin paying more for the service.

What: The city proposes either to start charging for garbage, trash and brush pickup, or turn the service over to a private company. Residents currently pay $1.55 a month for recycling and $1.25 a bag for yard waste. There is no charge for garbage, trash or brush pickup.
