Developing a love for old cameras Dick Shaffer has 300 or 400 antique cameras: He's not sure of the number himself.

GERMANTOWN -- Dick Shaffer collects cameras with some heft. Wooden behemoths that take equally substantial tripods to hold them; box cameras resembling bricks in shape and weight; and cameras whose bellows fold out in beautiful precision.

Though you might find Shaffer taking a photo nowadays with a fancy digital model, it is the antique models that held film encased in precious darkness that most take his fancy.

He has several hundred of them -- 300 or 400, he's not really sure of the total -- and they're all carefully boxed away from dust in his basement.
