RIVERSIDE -- Last summer, during another weightlifting session,
Carroll High School football coach Steve Bartlett asked player Jon
McArdle what position he wanted in the fall.
"I said, 'Coach, I just want to play on Friday nights,' " McArdle
said last week on a quiet bench after a Carroll practice. "Of course,
it wasn't fulfilled last year. But this year, I have another shot."
McArdle, like hundreds of high school football players around the
area, has worked this summer for his shot. For every player, though,
there are different goals and different pressures. Some want a
scholarship to Ohio State. Some want to impress the girls. And some
just want their names called for duty.
