Article: Proposal to abolish police department divides community

BRADFORD -- A proposal to abolish the police department has created a rift in a community already divided by the Miami-Darke county line.

The Village Council tonight could vote on two ordinances: one to disband the department, the other to hire the Miami County Sheriff's Department to provide police protection for the community of around 1,900.

Mayor Jeff Wirrig said the proposal evolved during discussions with Sheriff Charles Cox on options for the village's department following the departure this summer of police Chief Frank Maus.

Support of council members grew as they talked with the sheriff about growing costs for training, liability insurance, wages and benefits, he said.
