YELLOW SPRINGS -- There was an important stop on the unusual road to a Nobel Prize for Italian-born geneticist Mario R. Capecchi.

Before he was a student of Nobel laureate James Watson, who co- discovered the structure of DNA, and before he graduated Harvard with a Ph.D. in biophysics in 1967, Capecchi studied at Antioch College. He graduated in 1961 with a bachelor of science in chemistry and physics.

On Monday, Capecchi, now a distinguished professor of human genetics and biology at the University of Utah, won the 2007 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for a groundbreaking technique using embryonic stem cells to mutate the genes of mice.
