Fairfax City has stopped funding all Metrobus routes operating
within the city, making it the only Washington area jurisdiction
where all Metrobus routes are funded wholly by other municipalities.
The city ceased paying its $55,000 yearly subsidy for the 29K
route, which runs along Route 236 between George Mason University and
Old Town Alexandria via Fairfax City, Fairfax County and the City of
Alexandria. Fairfax County and Alexandria have agreed to split
Fairfax City's share evenly between them.
Fairfax City officials argue that the city pays for its own
internal bus system, the CUE bus. CUE buses operate within Fairfax
City and to the Vienna Metro station and George Mason University.
