TRUE SPORTS fans hold opening ceremonies in the same sort of
regard kids have for Christmas Eve: an unnecessarily drawn out affair
before the main event. But you've got to hand it to our neighbours,
they know how to put on a do.
Mind you with a $5.5 million budget, most would put together a
decent shin-dig as the Aussies did for Friday night's World Cup
opening extravaganza at Telstra Stadium.
There was the wonderful - thousands of kids creating one rugby
player "running" into score.
And the weird - Blair Witch-type figures in flames.
And the warblers - John Williamson made an(other) appearance.
It was light on fireworks and high in theatre. Which was probably
