It wouldn't appear to bode well for the Washington Bullets, who
yesterday opened rookie and free agent camp. Melvin Turpin-once a
Bullet for less than a day and hopeful of being one again a year
after the Utah Jazz cut him because of a weight problem-said he tired
after just half of a 10-minute scrimmage.
Still it seems most of the 22 hopefuls who gathered for a 2
1/2-hour workout in a sweatbox of a gymnasium at Bowie State
University met a similar fate. So Bullets Coach Wes Unseld was
drawing no conclusions about Turpin or any others as he prepared to
begin two-a-day practices today with the task of narrowing the camp's
roster to 12 for a pair of exhibition games this weekend.
