Article: Prisoners learn yogic breathing

PRISONERS LOCKED up for life are taking yogic breathing classes to help them get a better night's sleep and relieve stress.

The Department of Corrections has hosted three courses in Christchurch and one in Wellington in the past year, and the maximum security Auckland Prison is holding its first session for inmates in July.

The six-to-10-day courses run by the Art of Living Foundation see inmates spend up to three hours a day performing yoga and practising breathing techniques.

Instructor Peter Mittermuller helped launch the scheme, run by volunteers, after visiting a friend in prison. He said up to 20 inmates took part in each course.
