One year ago, an Atlantic Coast Conference basketball writer
asked DeMatha High School Coach Morgan Wootten if Ted Jeffries, a
6-foot-10, 240-pound backup center on the 1988 Stags city
championship team, could play for the University of Virginia.
"I said he can start for Virginia right now," recalled Wootten
about his reply. "I really believed that."
Perhaps Jeffries could have had an impact on the court for the
Cavaliers last winter, but he elected an unusual path for someone who
had a full athletic scholarship waiting for him. Instead of playing
in one of the nation's premier college basketball conferences, he
ended up playing for Fork Union Academy, a military prep school.
The 1988-89 ...
