1st LD Writethru: EU leaders sign Lisbon Treaty

LISBON, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Heads of state and government of the European Union (EU) member states Thursday began to sign the Lisbon Treaty in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.

The signing ceremony was held at the magnificent Jeronimos Monastery, a 16th century structure that was named a World Heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The leaders hope that Lisbon Treaty, which replaces the failed EU Constitution, can make decision-making more efficient in light of the ever-enlarging nature of the bloc.
